Content Writers and Copywriters Aren't the Same

Content Writers and Copywriters Aren't the Same

Yes, I said it: content writers and copywriters are not the same. They don't have the same requirements, goals, or skill sets, nor should they.

Some people can do both, and some do both well. But writing content doesn't make you a content writer any more than owning a kitchen makes you a chef.

A copywriter's job is to deliver a message fast, clean, and in a format that actually gets read. Not just good copy. Great copy.

A content writer goes deeper: covering a topic with real detail, research, and substance.

Simple example: a good copywriter gets your audience to open an email from the subject line alone. A content writer delivers the email itself for everyone who clicked.

The two do bleed into each other, and yes, you can find people who do both. But genuinely excelling at both is rare because each is its own focused discipline.

If you're unsure which way to go, or you need broader strategic direction before you specialize, your first marketing hire should probably be product marketing. It sits at the intersection and helps you figure out what you actually need first.

Define what you're trying to achieve, your timeline, your urgency. Then hire accordingly.
